Short Shorts

thehuntedjamespattersonNovellas and short stories aren’t new, neither are serialized shorts published in the eBook formats. But, the dime store novel, the little print copy, is being resurrected by the trendsetting bestselling writer, James Patterson. He has released a new line of books called Bookshots under Hatchette Book Group’s imprint Little, Brown.

What’s exciting about this endeavor? Patterson wants to recapture the audience of American adults who have abandoned reading books. A 2015 Pew Research Study reported that the number of American adults who do not read books is a whopping 27%. That’s over one out of four of us that depends on visual media for entertainment, news, education, and opinion development.

Why is that an issue? It’s because reading books improve our lives in a variety of ways including stress reduction, knowledge attainment, memory improvement, improved focus, and many, many other benefits. Books are also known to help you develop compassion for others. Reading opens our lives and our imaginations to that which is outside of our immediate reach and embeds those images and feelings into our minds. We need that more than a visual clip.

What is a Bookshot? It is a small story about 150 pages long or less. These stories are so action-packed that James Patterson describes them as movies in a book. He expects most of them will take you a couple of hours to read. The objective is that you get the story and the resolution in one sitting without all the extra stuff. Of course, his line is suspense, but he has also released a line called Bookshot Flames that consist of romance story lines.

Keep in mind, this concept isn’t new. However, this concept may now interest more bookstores, convenience stores, and retail stores when it comes to stocking the little book on their shelves. Hey keep writing. Maybe your little book can be the next big thing!
