So You Want to Write a Book is the title of my online self-publishing workshop and the soon to be released book. I am on a mission to help anyone and everyone interested in writing a book achieve that goal. But, after last night’s election, I think I am going to add another piece to my mission. What’s that? Getting people to read. No matter how many books we self-publish or are traditionally publish, if we as a country are not reading them, we are not growing, we are languishing. According to a studies published in 2015 and 2016 by the Pew Research Center, 27% of American adults do not read books. That is a strong indicator that over 1 out of 4 adults in the United States are dependent on sound bites from television, unsubstantiated tidbits on social media, television shows, and movies as a mean to help formulate an opinion. As human nature would have it, many may gravitate toward one trusted source which may be biased and one-sided in its delivery of news and information to help formulate opinions.
I am not sure how we change the world as it is, other than to try to raise our own standards higher hoping to bring others with us. However, we must make sure that our children and anyone who is interested, learn to read a variety of works to promote compassion, promote tolerance, and promote love. One of the benefits of reading is the creation of a society that is inclusive and growth-oriented. So whether you are a child or an adult, pick up a book. Learn something new. Don’t be afraid.
Reading is Fundamental. There’s no use being an author or a writer if no one reads. Promote Reading! The Reading is Fundamental program issued a study in 2015 that states over 93 million adults – nearly half of the adult population – read at or below the basic level needed to contribute successfully to society. This lack of literacy contributes to poverty and injustices. As a society who has always led the way, we will never reach our potential if our masses cannot read. So fellow authors, please, don’t just write, teach someone to read.
